National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)
Introduction
The National Talent Search Examination will be conducted for students studying at the Class X level. The examination consists of tests, namely Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The items in the MAT and SAT are multiple choice questions. Each question has four alternatives. The candidate has to select one correct answer from the given alternatives and mark its number in the answer-sheet as per instructions given on the answer sheet. Each correct answer carries one mark. Thus, the total score of a candidate in a test is equal to the number of questions answered correctly by him/her.
NTSE is a national level scholarship exam under NTS scheme in Indian since 1963. This scheme was introduced as National Science Talent Search Scheme. The scheme aims at awarding scholarship for higher studies and nurturing talented students.
It spots and acknowledges students studying at the class X level with high intellectual and tutorial talent. Talent refers to the potentiality that manifests itself in a high level of performance in one or more specialized areas. The scheme covers areas like science, social science, engineering, medicine, management and law.
The monthly scholarship scheme to provide financial assistance to talented students, is awarded to candidates for pursuing courses in Humanities, Fine arts,Languages, Vocational Studies, Social Sciences, Sciences and Commerce up to doctoral level and in professional courses like management,law, engineering, medicines, and technology, up to second-degree level.
A 2- level examination is conducted every year.
1. 1st level is conducted by States and Union Territories
2. 2nd level is conducted by NCERT
Mental Ability Test (MAT)
This test is given to the candidates to judge their power of reasoning, ability to think, ability to judge, evaluate or discriminate, ability to visualize in the space, spatial orientation, etc. A variety of questions, for example: analogies, classification, series, pattern perception, hidden figures, coding-decoding, block assembly, problem solving etc. are used for this purpose.
Who Can Apply?
The eligibility criteria for both the levels are:-
Level 1
1. All Indian students studying in Class X in a recognized school.
2. The applicant should be less than 18 years as on 1st July2017 and should not be employed
3. The applicant should be appearing for the first time.
4. Other criteria varies from state to state.
Level 2
1. Based on the student’s enrollment at the secondary level, a quota is computed proportionally for each State and Union Territory, with minimum of 10 for union territory and 25 for a state.
2. General category 40% and others 32%.
Instructions For Indian Students Studying Abroad
Students studying abroad are exempt for level 1 exam; they can directly appear for level 2 exams of NTSE. The scholarship is granted only if the candidate will pursue further studies in India only.
How to apply?
1. A circular or advertisement will be issued by the State/Union territory accordingly the candidates need to apply for the level-1 Exam. Generally the advertisement is released in the month of July-August.
2. Candidate can download the application form, through the official website or collect it from the listed liaison officer.
3. Candidate should submit only once, for both the level a common application form and fees to the liaison officer of State/Union territory.
4. The selected candidates will receive the examination dates and roll number, through speed post by NCERT.
5. The Indian nationality Students, who are studying abroad can download the form from the official site and can apply through their Institutional Head, where they are presently studying.
Examination Pattern:
Both the level of examination comprises of 3 papers, which test the overall conduct of the candidates. The tests are:-
1. Mental Ability Test (MAT),
2. Language Test and
3. Scholastic Ability Test (SAT).
The test will help to know the overall conduct of a candidates.
The Paper consist multiple choice questions. For level 2 there will be negative marking for the wrong answers only, no negative markings for un-attempted questions. The tests are available in Asamiya, Bangla, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malyalam, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. However, language test is available in two languages – English & Hindi.

Scholarship:
Through the level 1 written examination, the candidates are selected by State/Union territory for level 2 exams, which is conducted by NCERT. Of which 1000 Scholarships are awarded for each group of students appearing for class X exam, in which there is reservation for SC and ST candidates based on the national norms of 15% and 7.5% respectively and 3% for persons with disabilities. Qualifying marks for candidates from general and other (SC/ST/PH) categories is 40% and 35% respectively.
The amount of scholarship for class XI and XII is Rs.1250 per month and Rs.2000 per month for students studying undergraduate and above. The Scholarship amount for PhD is fixed as per the UGC norms. Immediately after the result, the scholarship is provided.
