NRI Quota & Govt. Colleges in India
NRI Quota & Govt. Engineering Colleges in India
Are you an NRI and aiming to relocate to India from UAE / Saudi Arabia / Oman / Qatar / Bahrain / Kuwait in order to pursue Bachelor’s from the top-tier colleges of India??
If so, this article meets your requirements.
It is apparent that most NRI parents and students could have heard about the NRI Quota, but they don’t know what it is absolutely. We’re here to take you through the NRI Quota and the Govt. Colleges fall under this Quota.
Note: According to the latest update from DASA, from 2021 onwards, JEE Scores will be made mandatory for NRI/PIO/OCI Students to be eligible for DASA & CIWG Schemes. Hence, 2020 will be the last year when SAT 2 scores will be considered for DASA/CIWG Scheme.
Let’s start with IITs first:
JEE test is the mandatory test for all the NRI students who are aiming to get admission in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Don’t get super excited!
The harsh reality is you’ve to compete with the Indian students appearing for the JEE as there’s no specific quota available for NRIs.
Now, dive into the NITs and CFTIs:
DASA scheme is the only option to get admission in National Institute of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs), School of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).
What’s DASA Scheme?
DASA stands for Direct Admission for Students Abroad.
This scheme was launched by MHRD, India for the undergraduates of NRIs, PIO, OCI who are residing abroad (apart from India).
This scheme is applicable for you if you’re aiming to have Bachelor’s degree from Engineering/Architecture streams.

Seems great, no?
Being an NRI, you can get into these premier engineering colleges through DASA scheme.
You have to appear for the 3 SAT Subject Tests – Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admissions will be allotted on the merit basis.
Check Eligibility Criteria, Fees, Registration Process, Important Dates, Seat Allotment to make you familiar with this DASA 2019 scheme here.
There is one more scheme called CIWG, which is the subset of DASA.
About CIWG:
CIWG stands for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf.
CIWG scheme is applicable for the students who are residing in the below-mentioned Gulf countries:
- Iran
- Iraq
- Kuwait
- Oman
- Qatar
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
Pros of CIWG:
Gulf Quota: One-Third seats are allotted to Gulf Quota/CIWG scheme from DASA scheme.
Cost Effective: If you hail from a Gulf based country, you will need to pay just 6 lakh to accomplish the 8 semesters. But, a DASA student pays 22 lakh to finish the same graduation from DASA colleges
Competition: Competition for CIWG scheme is very huge. So, you have to work super hard to get admission in these prestigious engineering colleges.
Check the CIWG Scheme for more in detail.
State Level Govt. Colleges:
It’s pretty sure that NRIs will also get chance to on-board the Govt. colleges by appearing for the State Level Engineering entrance tests like EAMCET, TS EAMCET, K CET etc.
We’ll update the list of Govt. engineering colleges state-wise soon.
