All India's Technical Education Council (AICTE), the statutory body and the National Technical Education Council under the Department of Higher Education, is considering the decision to remove chemistry as a mandatory subject for admission to undergraduate engineering entrance exams in India.
At present, only those Indian & NRI candidates who have completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics can take admission to the Engineering streams after the respective Engineering Exams.
Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practice, Agriculture, Engineering Graphic and Business Studies are the optional subjects through which students can get admission in Engineering colleges of India. The letter has been sent to all the recognized engineering colleges regarding the same by AICTE.
Although most engineering colleges are admitted on the basis of JEE (Main) conducted by the National Testing Agency, some states have their own admissions to engineering colleges.
If the decision is made to consider Chemistry as an optional subject for BTech and BE courses, then it will help thousands of additional students to appear in engineering exams for admission to various engineering courses offered in AICTE approved colleges
Almost 3,000 educational institutions in India offer 13.2 lakh degrees in engineering and technology. NRI/PIO/OCI students can check here the Admission Process in Indian Engineering Colleges
