What is Internal Sliding?
Most of the students must have gotten introduced to Internal Sliding concept while carrying out their procedures for College Admissions in India. During the Counselling & Seat Allocation Process using JEE Rank, SAT Scores or state level Engineering Entrance Ranks, it is most likely to be suggested by the Prospective Colleges & experts. For those who are unaware of it, this article is for you.
During Seat Allocation & Counselling Sessions (by JoSAA, CSAB, DASA or State level counselling), students are given a choice to mark their prospective Engineering Institutes & Engineering Branch/Stream in Decreasing order of Preference. There occurs a condition where a student would have selected multiple courses from a same Institute.
Hence, the stream that he/she wishes to take, in the first priority, is marked on above the less prior ones. If the Rank/Score (example JEE Mains Rank/ SAT Score, etc.) of the student is not good enough for his/her 'first priority' stream, then he/she might get the 'less prior' steam (in same Institute). In that case, student is suggested to take admission with the less prior stream & apply for a shift in stream after his/hers College Results for 1st Year is released. This shift in the stream after completing 1 year in a College is called Internal Sliding. Remember that Internal Sliding can only occur in same College.
If that student scores good enough, the College Authorities will process his/her Internal Sliding Application & will transfer/slide him/her to his/her Stream of Choice.
This would also depend on the number of seats available in the prospective Stream. Another practical way that has been allowing students to slide internally is exchange. For example, 2 students of CSE Branch may want to switch to Mechanical Stream & simultaneously 2 students from Mechanical Stream may want to slide to CSE Stream/Branch. So it would be the most convenient case for 4 of these students & would depend less on their 1st Year College Results. But still results matter here.
This is possible only because the syllabus of each Engineering Branch/Stream is same during the 1st Year (out of the 4 year B.E. / B.Tech Program). Its the 2nd year from when the syllabus of each stream is introduced according to their field/stream of study.
Note that Internal Sliding can only occur in same College.
