I Have A Question

IB Physics

IB Physics

Physics is one of the most vital subjects of the sciences, as it explains the universe from the smallest particles to the astronomical distances between the galaxies.

Despite the exciting and extraordinary development of ideas throughout the history of physics, observations are essential to the very core of the subject. Models are developed to try to understand observations, and they themselves become theories that attempt to explain these observations. While the scientific methods may take a wide variety of forms still it emphasis on a practical approach.

Advantage of Learning Physics

Students learning physics get an opportunity to collect data, design and develop investigations and analyze results, collaborate with other students and discuss and learn about their findings. The investigations may be laboratory based simulations and data based.

Students also develop the skills to work independently and in collaboration with schools in different regions, to present the ways in which scientific research is conducted.

Physics syllabus outline:

Higher level (240 hours)

Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%

External assessment: 80%

Standard level (150 hours)

Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%

External assessment: 80%

Key features of the curriculum and assessment models:

The prescribed number of minimum hours is 150 for SL and 240 for HL and students are assessed both externally and internally. Students studying physics must go through a common core syllabus and a common internal assessment (IA) scheme at both the SL and HL.

Although there are skills and activities common to both the levels but students at High Level are required to study certain topics with in-depth knowledge and to study additional topics and extension material of a more demanding nature.

A practical approach to the course is emphasized through group 4 project and a combination of both short-term and long-term experiments, investigations and findings.

Internal assessment counts for 20% of the final assessment and is assessed through a single investigation which involves use of data base and a hands-on approach. Students are assessed internally by the teacher and moderated by the IB externally.

The external assessment of physics consists of three papers. In paper 1 there are 30 and 40 multiple-choice questions at Standard Level and High Level respectively whereas paper 2 consists of both short-answer and extended-response questions (and Additional Higher Level (AHL) material at HL). Paper -3 includes two sections; Section A contains1 data-based question & other short-answer questions on experimental work done by the students (and AHL material at HL). Section B contains short-answer and extended-response questions from all four options.
