IB Chemistry
Chemistry is a science that is a combination of academic study with the knowledge of acquiring practical and investigational skills. Chemistry is a subject that is often considered essential for many other courses in higher education, such as medicine, biological science and environmental science.
By studying chemistry as a subject, students become aware of how scientists work and how they communicate with each other. Emphasis in this course is given on practical approach even when there could be various forms of scientific methods.
Students get an opportunity to ideate investigations, develop manipulative skills, collect data, analyze results and collaborate with other students so that they can evaluate and discuss their findings. The investigations may be laboratory based simulations and data based. Students develop the art to work independently on their own design along with collaboration with schools in different regions, to showcase the way in which scientific research is conducted in the wider form.
Chemistry Syllabus Outline:
Higher level (240 hours)
Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%
External assessment: 80%
Standard level (150 hours)
Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%
External assessment: 80%
Key features of the curriculum and assessment models
The prescribed number of minimum hours for SL is 150 and for HL is 240.
Students are assessed both internally and externally.
Chemistry students go through a common core syllabus and a common internal assessment (IA) scheme at both the levels i.e. Standard Level and High Level.
There are many core skills and activities common to both SL and HL but students at HL are also required to study certain topics with in-depth knowledge. Students are also required to study additional topics extension material of a more demanding nature in other options.
A practical approach to the course is emphasized through the group 4 project and a mixture of both long-term and short-term experiments, investigations and findings.
Internal assessment accounts for 20% of the final assessment and this is assessed through an individual investigation. Student work is assessed internally by the teacher and moderated externally by the IB.
The external assessment of chemistry comprises of three written papers. In paper 1 there are 30 (at Standard Level) and 40 (at High Level) multiple-choice questions. Paper 2 contains short-answer and extended-response questions (and Additional Higher-Level material at HL). Paper 3 comprises of two sections; Section A consists of one data-based question and short-answer questions on experimental work (and AHL material at HL). Section B contains short-answer and extended-response questions from all the four options.
