- Dengue classified as protozoal: Since dengue is mosquito-borne like malaria, students mistakenly categorise it as protozoal; dengue is caused by a virus transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquito.
NEET 2009 asked to identify a pair of viral diseases. Students who selected Typhoid and Tuberculosis or Ringworm and AIDS lost marks because typhoid/TB are bacterial and ringworm is fungal. The correct pair was Common Cold and AIDS (both viral).

Questions present a list of diseases and ask you to identify which pair belongs to the same pathogen category - mixing bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoal diseases deliberately.

- Anopheles for filariasis: Students commonly assign Anopheles mosquito to filariasis because it is the most well-known mosquito vector; filariasis is actually transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, not Anopheles.
- Culex for malaria: Some students confuse the Culex mosquito as the malaria vector; malaria is exclusively transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito carrying Plasmodium sporozoites.
NEET 2018 asked which mosquito-transmitted pathogen causes chronic inflammation of lymphatic vessels. The answer is elephantiasis (filariasis by Wuchereria bancrofti via Culex). Students who thought Anopheles selected malaria-related options.

A classic NEET question asks: The infective stage of malarial parasite is (a) Gametocyte (b) Merozoite (c) Sporozoite (d) Trophozoite. Students choosing merozoite confuse the erythrocytic stage with the mosquito-to-human transmission stage.

Questions test precise knowledge of Plasmodium life cycle stages and which species causes which type of fever, often providing plausible but incorrect species-fever combinations.

Trick: P. vivax and P. ovale both cause benign tertian malaria (48h). P. falciparum causes malignant tertian/quotidian malaria. Only P. malariae causes quartan malaria recurring every 72 hours (4th day).

Trick: Metastasis is the hallmark of malignant tumours only. Benign tumours remain localised, grow slowly and do not metastasise. If a tumour shows metastasis, it is by definition malignant/cancerous.

- Widal test for malaria: Students sometimes associate Widal test with malaria due to both being common tropical diseases; Widal test is specifically for typhoid fever (Salmonella typhi), while malaria is diagnosed by blood smear examination.
- Schick test for tuberculosis: The Schick test determines immunity/susceptibility to diphtheria, not tuberculosis. Tuberculosis uses the Mantoux/tuberculin test. This confusion arises because both are skin-based tests.
NEET/CBSE PMT repeatedly asks: Widal test is used for susceptibility of (a) Malaria (b) Diabetes (c) Diphtheria (d) Typhoid. Students selecting malaria or diphtheria confuse Widal (typhoid) with blood smear (malaria) or Schick (diphtheria).
