Letters of Recommendation (LOR):

1. Choose Your Recommenders Wisely: Select recommenders who know you well in an academic context. These individuals could be your teachers, school counselors, or mentors. They should be able to speak to your character, work ethic, and academic abilities.

2. Request LORs in Advance: Approach your recommenders well ahead of your application deadlines, whether you're applying for colleges or scholarships. They'll appreciate having ample time to craft thoughtful letters on your behalf.

3. Share Your Goals: Inform your recommenders about your academic and career goals, as well as the programs or scholarships you're targeting. This information will help them tailor the LOR to fit your specific needs.

4. Provide Necessary Information: Make sure your recommenders have all the information they need to submit the LOR on your behalf. This may include online submission instructions or details on where to send physical letters.

5. Show Gratitude: After your recommenders have completed and submitted the LORs, express your sincere appreciation. A thank-you note or email is a respectful gesture.

A LOR mainly consists of three parts: opening, body and closing. The presentation and appearance of your LOR impact the individual’s candidacy. It should be typewritten instead of handwritten and proofread carefully for grammatical or typographical error. You should always include contact details and time frame when you can be contacted if required.

Before getting your recommendation letter written, you must always approach the person who can and must be ready to promote you and your skills. The person writing your LOR should:

• Know you for a significant amount of time (at least one year)
• Have a good opinion of you, both personally and professionally
• Describe your work and character positively
• Know your educational and career goals
• Have the ability to write a well-written letter

It is important to apply for the LOR as early as possible because it is important to write a significant Letter of Recommendation which takes time. • Cover note and resume that includes your contact information
• Transcripts
• Admissions essay/personal statement
• Copies of graded papers/assignments from the course you took with them
• A list of schools to which you are applying, due dates for each application with the earliest due date listed
• First Copy of the application recommendation forms
• An addressed and stamped envelope.
