The Digital SAT is the latest version of the standardized college admissions test offered by the College Board. It was officially launched in Spring 2024 for U.S. students and continues to be the primary format in 2025.
If you’re a junior or sophomore planning your college applications in 2025, you’ll be taking the fully digital SAT, which features several key differences compared to the traditional paper-and-pencil format.
Structure:
- Two sections: Reading & Writing and Math [SAT Suite of Assessments – College Board]
- Total testing time: 2 hours and 14 minutes
- Reading & Writing: 64 minutes (split into two equal modules)
- Math: 70 minutes (split into two equal modules)
- 10-minute break between sections
- Question types: Mostly multiple choice, with some math questions requiring a direct input of the answer [SAT Suite of Assessments – College Board]
- No penalty for guessing: It’s better to choose an answer than leave it blank [SAT Suite of Assessments – College Board]
Key Features:
- Computer-based: Taken on a laptop or tablet at a testing center or school, potentially even your own device.
- Adaptive: The difficulty of the second half of each section adjusts based on your performance in the first half.
- Students belonging to the age group of 17 to 19 appear for the SAT exam in maximum numbers.
- For USA students, the Digital SAT exam is applicable by 2024 onwards, that is, March, May, June, August, October, November, and December but the number of attempts is limited to 5.
- The knowledge skill of students is tested on the basis of the Critical Reading section, Mathematics section and Writing section.
- Earlier The SAT questionnaire was designed for the time duration of 3-4 hours but now Digital SAT is of 2 hours 14 minutes.
- The range of scores varies from 200 to 800 on each of the 2 sections , i.e., you can get a minimum score of 600 and maximum score of 1600.
