USA Guide to IIT Admission
Undergraduate admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology is open to students who are residents of the United States. But the road of admission depends largely on the student’s citizenship and OCI or PIO classification, not simply on the fact that the student lives or studies in the USA.
An Indian national living in USA usually will go through Indian-national route of JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling. A foreign national or an eligible OCI/PIO candidate who is treated as a foreign national can directly register for JEE Advanced without appearing for JEE Main first.
Choosing the correct category is important because it affects:
This guide explains IIT admission from the USA for NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign-national students using the official JEE Advanced 2026 rules.
Important update:JoSAA rules and IIT, JEE Advanced rules changes every year. Students should check the latest official information brochure before registering.
Yes. Students studying in the USA can apply to IITs if they satisfy the relevant JEE Advanced and Class 12 eligibility requirements.
The usual routes are:
| Student category | JEE Main required? | IIT admission route |
|---|---|---|
| Indian citizen living in the USA | Yes | JEE Main → JEE Advanced → JoSAA |
| NRI student holding an Indian passport | Yes | JEE Main → JEE Advanced → JoSAA |
| Eligible OCI/PIO candidate choosing Indian-national treatment | Yes | JEE Main → JEE Advanced → JoSAA |
| OCI/PIO candidate treated as foreign | No | Direct JEE Advanced registration → JoSAA |
| US citizen or another foreign national | No | Direct JEE Advanced registration → JoSAA |
Indian nationals and OCI/PIO candidates treated at par with Indian nationals shall be required to qualify through JEE Main. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates falling under OCI/PIO (F) category can directly register for JEE Advanced subject to other eligibility criteria.
Related JEE route guide: JEE Main and JEE Advanced for NRI students explains which candidates need JEE Main before JEE Advanced.
The Indian citizen seeking admission as a regular undergraduate student of IIT through JEE Advanced and JoSAA does not require a separate NRI-only admission route.
An IIT seat is not given to an Indian citizen living in the USA just because the student is NRI or studied abroad. Normally the student is expected to:
Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates treated as foreign nationals can get foreign supernumerary seats. These seats should not be confused with an NRI’s quota. Each programme has different eligibility conditions and limits.
Before comparing IIT admission with DASA, students should understand which route applies to them based on citizenship, OCI/PIO status, JEE Main requirement and JEE Advanced eligibility. This free JEE eBook helps USA-based families plan the preparation and admission journey with better clarity.
DASA is used for admission to NITs, IIITs, SPAs and other institutions in the NIT+ system that are part of the participating institutions. This is not the usual way for undergraduates to get into IITs.
For the citizenship category, students applying for IITs must follow the JEE Advanced and JoSAA route.
Read the detailed admission guides: NRI quota in IITs covers Indian-citizen, OCI/PIO and Foreign National seat rules. | DASA counselling procedure covers the separate NIT+ admission route.
A student can live in New York, California, Texas, Florida or any other US state and still be treated as an Indian national for IIT admission when the student remains an Indian citizen.
The student must normally follow these steps.
For JEE Advanced 2026, Indian-national candidates had to be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the JEE Main B.E./B.Tech paper, subject to the prescribed category distribution and tied-score provisions.
Qualifying through JEE Main is only one requirement. The candidate must also meet the applicable:
Qualifying JEE Main does not automatically qualify students for JEE Advance . The candidate should fill up the separate JEE Advanced application in the stipulated time.
JEE Advanced has two papers which are compulsory. For conferment of a rank the student has to satisfy the subject-wise and aggregate qualifying requirements as applicable.
Candidates with a JEE Advanced rank can apply for JoSAA and fill in their preferred IIT and academic-programme choices.
JoSAA manages seat allocation for 23 IITs and other participating institutions through a common online platform.
Indian-passport route: NRI JEE Main and Advanced guide covers examination registration, qualification and preparation.
OCI and PIO candidates must check the date on which their OCI or PIO card was obtained.
Under the JEE Advanced 2026 rules, these candidates could choose either:
The option had to be selected during JEE Advanced registration and could not be changed later.
An OCI/PIO (I) candidate must:
An OCI/PIO (F) candidate can register directly for JEE Advanced without appearing for JEE Main.
The candidate is not eligible to claim GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST or PwD reservation benefits and can only compete for foreign supernumerary seats.
Candidates who received their OCI/PIO cards post 4th March, 2021 were treated as OCI/PIO (F) candidates and chose the foreign-national route under the 2026 rules.

OCI/PIO route guide: NRI quota in IITs explains OCI/PIO (I), OCI/PIO (F) and foreign supernumerary seats.
A student who is not an Indian citizen by birth or naturalisation is treated as a foreign national under the JEE Advanced rules.
Foreign-national candidates:
Foreign-national candidates are considered in addition to the Indian-national candidates shortlisted through JEE Main.
Seats allocated to foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates are supernumerary and are capped at up to 10% of the total seats in each IIT programme.
A foreign candidate can receive a seat only when:
There is no separate female subcategory within the foreign supernumerary-seat pool.
Foreign-student route: NRI quota and foreign seats in IITs provides the detailed seat-pool explanation.
Foreign supernumerary seats and IIT admission still require strong JEE Advanced performance. The TestPrepKart JEE app helps students studying outside India practise chapter-wise questions, take mock tests and track preparation progress in one place.
Students following a US high school curriculum must satisfy both JEE Advanced eligibility and IIT Class 12 admission requirements.
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics must be compulsory subjects in the qualifying examination.
A student should not assume that AP Calculus, AP Physics, SAT or ACT scores will compensate for a missing required subject. IIT eligibility is assessed using the recognised Class 12 or equivalent qualification.
For IIT admission, the candidate must pass the Class 12 or equivalent examination with at least five subjects.
For calculating the relevant aggregate, the following subjects are considered:
In cases where marks are not awarded out of 100, the prescribed process may scale the marks for aggregate calculation.
The candidate must satisfy at least one of these conditions:
The aggregate requirement is 65% for eligible SC, ST and PwD candidates.
A qualification completed outside India must be recognised as equivalent to the Indian 10+2 system.
The official criteria recognise qualifications such as:
Students with a different foreign qualification may need an AIU equivalence certificate. Families should start this process early and not wait for JoSAA document verification.
Detailed eligibility guide: JEE eligibility for IITs covers age, attempts, Class 12 subjects, marks and previous-IIT conditions.
The SAT, ACT, and AP scores are not an alternative to JEE Advanced in the normal undergraduate IIT entry pathway.
These scores may be part of a student’s US academic profile, but IIT seat allocation through JoSAA requires:
A foreign national may be exempt from JEE Main, but not from JEE Advanced under this route.
JEE examination guidance: JEE Main and JEE Advanced for NRI students explains why JEE Advanced remains necessary for IIT admission.
The tentative JEE Advanced 2026 city list included two foreign examination centres:
The tentative list did not include a centre in the United States. A USA-based student therefore had to plan travel to an available foreign centre or to India.
Families should budget and plan for:
Students should not make non-refundable travel arrangements until the examination centre is confirmed on the official admit card.
USA application and examination guide: How NRIs in the USA can apply and sit for JEE covers registration, centres, documents and travel planning.
For examination centres outside India, the JEE Advanced 2026 registration fees were:
| Candidate type | Fee |
|---|---|
| Indian national or OCI/PIO (I) | USD 200 |
| Foreign national or OCI/PIO (F) residing in a non-SAARC country | USD 300 |
Payment-gateway, processing and bank charges were additional. Candidates were responsible for their own travel and examination-centre arrangements.
These amounts are examination-registration fees and should not be confused with IIT tuition, hostel or institute charges.
Separate tuition-cost guide: IIT fee for an NRI explains IIT tuition, hostel and institute charges; these are separate from exam-registration fees.
Please refer to the final document list in the latest JEE Advanced and JoSAA instructions.
USA-based students should generally organise the following documents.
Foreign and OCI/PIO candidates may have to submit citizenship proof, a foreign passport and the applicable OCI or PIO card.
USA document-planning guide: How NRIs in the USA can apply and sit for JEE provides a related application and document checklist.
Determine whether the student is:
Do not select the admission route solely using the student’s country of residence or the parents’ immigration status.
Confirm that the qualifying programme includes:
Also check whether AIU equivalence will be required.
Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) candidates must qualify through JEE Main.
Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates can register directly for JEE Advanced, provided they satisfy all other conditions.
The US high school curriculum may be different in depth, order of topics and problem solving style from the JEE syllabus.
A preparation plan should include:
Verify the JEE Main and JEE Advanced city list individually. The city available for one exam may not be available for the other exam.
Students should:
An OCI/PIO candidate shall not apply through JEE Main credentials and submit direct OCI/PIO (F) application. Officially, such duplicate applications can result in cancellation.
The student must appear for both papers and meet the rank-list requirements.
Students with a JEE Advanced rank should:
JEE Advanced rank does not guarantee admission in IIT. Admission shall be based on the rank of candidate, choices of programme, category, availability of seat and completion of JoSAA formalities.
Detailed counselling guide: JoSAA counselling process covers registration, choice filling, allotment, document verification and reporting.

An Indian citizen living outside the country is also required to qualify through the relevant JEE Main and JEE Advanced route.
DASA is meant for the participating institutes of the NIT+ system and not the normal undergraduate IIT route.
SAT, ACT and AP scores do not replace JEE Advanced for JoSAA-based IIT admission.
Some US students are advanced in Mathematics and Physics but not Chemistry, through the necessary qualifying programme.
Equivalence certificate may take some time. Students should not delay until counselling starts.
An OCI/PIO candidate eligible to choose between OCI/PIO (I) and OCI/PIO (F) should compare the two routes carefully before registration.
Candidates based in the USA may have to travel abroad for JEE Advanced. The admission plan must include travel planning.
A good GPA in school does not mean you are going to have a competitive rank in JEE Advanced. Students need to analyze the mock tests and practice JEE specific problems.
Avoid route confusion: NRI quota in IITs clarifies the IIT seat route. | DASA counselling procedure clarifies the separate NIT+ process.
An NRI student who is an Indian citizen has to qualify JEE Main and JEE Advanced as per the norms. NRI residence alone is not a separate route to IIT admission.
Yes. A foreign national can register directly for JEE Advanced without appearing for JEE Main, subject to the other eligibility conditions.
OCI/PIO (F) candidates can use direct JEE Advanced registration. OCI/PIO (I) candidates must qualify through JEE Main.
There is no separate NRI-only seat pool in the regular JEE Advanced and JoSAA pathway for Indian citizens living abroad.
Yes, provided the qualification is recognised as equivalent to Class 12 and the student satisfies the compulsory-subject and marks requirements. An AIU equivalence certificate may be required.
Not by themselves. The complete qualifying credential must satisfy the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, five-subject and equivalence requirements.
A candidate must either obtain the prescribed aggregate marks or satisfy the applicable top-20-percentile condition.
No. The candidate must meet the eligibility conditions, obtain the required rank and satisfy the relevant programme closing-rank requirement. Seat availability is also limited.
The tentative JEE Advanced 2026 city list did not include a US centre. The listed foreign centres were Abu Dhabi and Kathmandu.
No. DASA is associated with participating NITs, IIITs, SPAs and other institutions in the NIT+ system. IIT admission follows the applicable JEE Advanced and JoSAA process.
