Yes.NRIs studying in the USA are eligible for taking up JEE Main exam online provided that they fulfill NTA’s eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2027 (October 22, 2026). It is not necessary for you to be attending classes in India. However, your qualifying examination should fulfill Class 12 criteria.
Two students: one who has an Indian passport and who is in his last year of schooling in Texas, and another who was born in the US and whose passport is a US one. Each of them may have a valid reason to sit for the JEE Main, but it would be wrong for them to think that the two have similar paths to get into IIT.

Before starting your application, check your nationality, the year you passed or will pass Grade 12, and whether your qualification is recognised. NTA’s 2026 Age limit was not set by JEE Main criteria for appearing, but the specified range of qualifying examination years was permitted for the particular cycle. Do not automatically apply these years to 2027.
The other distinction to be made here is that while eligibility to appear for JEE Main does not necessarily mean eligibility for admission in a certain college, an institute or counselling procedure can make additional demands about subjects and performance at class 12 level.

Sure, an eligible qualification of the United States High School may be taken into consideration, but it is about recognition. According to the 2026 JEE Main brochure, qualifications from other countries were recognized provided that the required equivalency for Indian 10+2 was fulfilled. Applicants holding Class 12th or equivalent examination from outside India might require an equivalency certificate issued by AIU.
Having a high GPA or AP grade is not enough to replace the official equivalence. If you have credits and letter grades on your transcript, ask the school about its final documents, and then find out what NTA and the admission authorities need.

NTA has opened JEE Main 2027 Session 1 registration from October 24, 2026. The deadline to apply and pay without a late fee is November 22, 2026, at 11:50 PM IST. The official schedule below helps students applying from the USA track each stage.

For US families: The dates mentioned are per Indian Standard Time (IST). Please note the time zone mentioned in the notice. This is particularly important if you intend to fill the form during the deadline day from California, Texas, or East Coast regions.
You can register through the official NTA JEE Main website – jeemain.nta.nic.in. The steps mentioned below are according to the process in 2026 but you will have to follow the instructions in the portal for 2027 when the registration process starts.

The 2026 guidelines of NTA caution not to have several applications on one candidate. In case the payment appears to be late, verify its status before making another application. The confirmation page is a more valid proof that the application process was successfully completed than the payment page.

Keep the JEE Main application documents separate from later counselling documents. The exact 2027 list and accepted file sizes will be given in NTA’s bulletin and application portal.

Practical tip: Compare the student’s name and date of birth across the passport, school records and JEE form. If your US transcript follows a different name format, resolve the difference before the deadline. Keep copies of every uploaded file and the final confirmation page in one folder.
The official JEE Main 2027 fee has not been announced.In 2026, NTA had varied fees for examination centers within India and for those outside India. The actual figure depended on the combination of papers and candidates’ categories.
For reference, the following were 2026 fees per session for a single paper, including Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), when the examination centre was outside India:

For the third-gender category in 2026, the charge for submitting a single paper from abroad would be ₹3,000. The processing fees along with GST would be extra. These examples do not indicate that all NRIs, OCIs, or foreign nationals would be eligible for a reservation in India.
When budgeting, also account for possible travel and hotel costs if the final exam centre is far from home. Do not include DASA counselling fees or IIT tuition in the JEE Main application fee.
Overseas exam centres can save NRI students a trip to India, but they are confirmed separately for each examination year. The city list for JEE Main 2027 was not available in the official 2027 bulletin as of the date of this guide.
In JEE Main 2026, the official NTA list included Washington, D.C. (ZZ15). This is a past year reference, and not a guarantee that Washington will be on offer in 2027. Students from California, New York, Texas, among other states in the US, need to verify the cities on the NTA list and the available preferences in the application form.
Selecting a preferred examination city also does not guarantee that NTA will allot that city. Wait for the official city-intimation slip and admit card before making non-refundable travel reservations.
The list for 2026 abroad comprised of centers based in locations including but not limited to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah (UAE), Doha (Qatar), Muscat (Oman), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait, Bahrain (Manama), Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), among others. This list for 2027 will be different.

One of the most useful practices for students from the USA is keeping a regular eye on the official account and the registered email. If your institution has its examinations or graduation ceremonies at about the same time, then make sure that you plan ahead because NTA will not change your timetable.
The right route depends on the college you are targeting. JEE Main and JEE Advanced are different examinations with different purposes. DASA is a separate admission scheme, not a replacement for either examination.
