In order to determine the eligibility of DASA for a particular student from the USA, consider the category of the nationality of the student, qualification of the school attended, educational criteria and the JEE Main score. It may be noted that having a US address or a green card or OCI Card does not end all the criteria of DASA. Those preparing for 2027 should go by the revised guidelines.
In USA families, the following are the most vital aspects that come to play in regards to eligibility: Is the student a citizen or an OCI? In what place(s) did the pertinent years of schooling take place? Which qualification will the student get? Is the student’s academic performance meeting the subject and aggregate requirements? Does the student have the requisite JEE Main rank?
Student Category + School History + Recognized Qualification + Required Subjects + Academic Threshold + JEE Main = DASA Eligibility Check
2027 planning note: These are some of the rules that have been established under DASA UG 2026. Do not transfer the age requirement, academic deadline, and other cycle-based rules automatically into DASA 2027 until the next admission process framework comes out.

A student studying in the United States may be eligible for DASA, but eligibility is not decided by the country or US state where the family currently lives.
The eligible students for the DASA UG 2026 scheme would be the Foreign Nationals, OCI/PIO Students, and NRIs as per the stipulated eligibility criteria. The candidate was required to have the requisite scorecard and rank for the JEE Main 2026 and also possess the necessary educational qualification.
| Eligibility Area | What USA Families Should Verify |
|---|---|
| Student status | Indian/NRI, OCI/PIO category or Foreign National. |
| School history | Where the relevant school years and qualifying examination were completed. |
| Qualification | Whether the Class XII/equivalent qualification satisfies the applicable recognition requirements. |
| Subjects | Whether the student completed the required subjects for the intended program. |
| Academic performance | Whether the student satisfies the admission-year aggregate requirement. |
| JEE Main | Whether the student has the relevant JEE Main paper result and rank. |

Under the confirmed DASA UG 2026 framework, the listed eligible nationality/status groups included:
on its own sufficient to qualify as an eligible candidate. The candidate should also meet all the criteria concerning age, academics, JEE Main and residency requirements.
| USA Student Scenario | What Must Be Checked |
|---|---|
| Indian citizen / NRI studying in USA | Check the specific overseas-education condition, qualifying examination, academic requirements and JEE Main result. |
| US citizen | Check the Foreign National rules, academic requirements, qualifying credential and JEE Main requirement. |
| US citizen with OCI | Check the applicable OCI/PIO classification for the admission cycle before applying Indian-national or foreign-national conditions. |
| Indian citizen with US green card | A green card does not replace the citizenship and NRI eligibility check. Review the student’s Indian citizenship and school history. |
| Grade 11 in USA, Grade 12 in India | Do not answer from residence alone. Check the student’s nationality category and exact year-by-year school history. |
| Foreign national studying in India | Do not automatically apply the Indian-national overseas-schooling test. Check the foreign-national rules and other eligibility conditions. |
For citizenship, OCI and green-card scenarios, read: US Citizen, OCI, Green Card & JEE/DASA Route Guide .
For DASA UG 2026, candidates born on or after October 1, 2001 met the stated age condition. The accepted date of birth was based on the applicable Class X/equivalent or government-issued record.
Do not use October 1, 2001 as a DASA 2027 cutoff. It is the confirmed 2026 reference only. Check the age condition again when the student’s actual DASA cycle is published.
As per the DASA UG 2026 policy that has been confirmed, the candidate was required to possess either Class XII or its equivalent from a system that is recognized for the specific purpose of admission.
For the 2026 B.E./B.Tech. route, the academic threshold was 75% marks or 7.5 CGPA out of 10 in aggregate in five subjects, as applicable to the respective board.
For USA families
Do not use any conversion from the GPA of 4.0 to Indian percentage or 10-point scale yourself. Use the document that the student submitted at his/her college/university and the criteria required for the degree earned.
For US diploma, GPA, transcript and equivalence questions, read: AIU Equivalence for US High School Students, JEE & DASA .
For B.E./B.Tech. admission under DASA UG 2026, the Class XII/equivalent subject requirement included:
| Subject Position | 2026 B.E./B.Tech. Requirement |
|---|---|
| Required | Mathematics |
| Required | Physics |
| One additional subject | Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science or Biology |
Do not assume that every science or technology elective used by a US high school automatically satisfies the third-subject condition.
For DASA UG 2026, candidates needed a valid JEE Main 2026 score card and the relevant rank for their intended program.
| Program | 2026 JEE Main Paper |
|---|---|
| B.E./B.Tech. | Paper 1 |
| B.Arch. | Paper 2A |
| B.Plan. | Paper 2B |
Even fulfilling the JEE Main eligibility is not enough for the admission under the DASA scheme. There are other requirements which the candidate has to fulfill as well.
This is one of the most important areas where USA families make mistakes. The 2026 DASA rules did not apply exactly the same residential condition to every nationality category.
| Candidate Type | Confirmed 2026 School-History Baseline |
|---|---|
| Indian national studying abroad | At least two years of overseas schooling, including Class 11 and 12 or equivalents, during the eight-year span, with the qualifying examination conducted overseas. |
| Foreign national | The Rule of 2026 indicated that the foreign nationals who were enrolled in any country, such as India, could qualify if they met the admission requirements. |
| OCI/PIO | Check the applicable OCI/PIO category first before deciding which conditions apply. |
Important: Do not copy the Indian-national two-year overseas-schooling condition onto every US citizen, foreign national or OCI case.
The right question, then, is not only about whether the student has “an American curriculum.” The families should determine the specific final qualification, issuing institution, transcripts, subject requirements, and any equivalency proof for the particular diploma.
| US School Document | What It Helps Establish |
|---|---|
| High school diploma | The final school qualification awarded to the student. |
| Official transcript | Courses, grades and academic history. |
| School grading scale | How the school reports and interprets grades. |
| School-history records | Where relevant school years were completed. |
| Equivalence evidence where applicable | Whether the qualification is recognized for the intended admission route. |
For the detailed USA qualification issue, read: US High School Diploma, GPA & AIU Equivalence Guide .
An examination of mixed-country schooling should take place on an annual basis. A parent should keep track of the country in which each particular year of schooling takes place.
Example questions to answer
Do not duplicate the full transfer analysis on this page. Read: Grade 11 & 12 India or Abroad: DASA Eligibility Guide .
OCI students cannot be generalized into one group universally. The framework established in 2026 for OCI/PIO made a distinction between OCI/PIO classifications and provided different treatment based on classification.
For instance, the 2026 policy differentiated OCI/PIO applicants categorized as foreign citizens from OCI/PIO applicants considered equal to Indian citizens under particular situations. There were some guidelines that were based on the date of OCI/PIO card possession.
Do not use a blanket statement such as “all OCI students follow the foreign-national route” or “all OCI students follow the Indian-national route.”
Use the dedicated status guide: US Citizen, OCI, Green Card & DASA Eligibility .
DASA eligibility and CIWG eligibility are not the same question.
With the 2026 criteria confirmed, CIWG was one of the specific DASA categories that qualified a student if the latter had the proper employment relationship with parents and belonged to a country designated for such an advantage.
| Question | Where to Check It |
|---|---|
| Can the student use DASA? | Use this DASA eligibility page. |
| Does the student qualify for CIWG? | Check the separate parent-employment and CIWG category conditions. |
For the detailed USA-family scenario, read: CIWG Eligibility for USA Students With a Qualifying Parent .
Eligibility is based on the rules, but documents are how the student proves that those rules are satisfied.
| Eligibility Area | Evidence to Prepare |
|---|---|
| Identity / nationality | Passport and applicable nationality or OCI/PIO documentation. |
| Academic qualification | Qualifying examination records and transcript. |
| Overseas schooling where applicable | School-issued evidence showing the relevant years of education abroad. |
| Grading system | Official school grading evidence where needed. |
| Exam record | Applicable JEE Main score card and rank details. |
For the full document checklist, read: DASA Documents Required for USA Students .
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Identify the student’s citizenship and applicable OCI/PIO status. |
| 2 | Write down where the relevant school years were completed. |
| 3 | Identify the exact final school qualification and diploma issuer. |
| 4 | Check the required subjects for the intended engineering program. |
| 5 | Check the applicable academic aggregate requirement. |
| 6 | Confirm the relevant JEE Main paper and rank requirement. |
| 7 | Prepare the records needed to prove each condition. |
| 8 | Check the admission-year rules again before registration. |
If you have a child who holds dual citizenship, OCI status, has transferred schools, or has some unique qualification from the US, arrange for the documents in advance and get clarification on the specific situation of admissions.
Ask an Admission QuestionEligibility alone does not solve everything. After having a good opinion on the eligibility part, the remaining things to be done are preparing for the JEE Main, documentation and registration of colleges.

US citizenship cannot be taken as an eligibility criterion for DASA. Nationality, student status, previous schooling, academic qualification, subject requirement, and JEE Main score should all be verified.
Potentially yes, if the student satisfies the applicable NRI, academic, JEE Main and school-history requirements for the admission year.
A US citizen may fall under the foreign-national route, subject to the applicable academic, JEE Main and other DASA requirements for the cycle.
OCI alone is not enough for making this determination. The OCI/PIO category along with other criteria, such as academic performance, educational institution history, and JEE Mains qualification have to be considered.
A US green card does not by itself determine DASA eligibility. The student’s citizenship, NRI status, school history and other admission conditions matter.
The confirmed DASA UG 2026 B.E./B.Tech. rule required 75% marks or 7.5 CGPA out of 10 in aggregate in five subjects, as applicable to the respective board. Families should recheck the threshold for 2027.
For the confirmed 2026 B.E./B.Tech. framework, Mathematics and Physics were required along with one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science or Biology.
Under DASA UG 2026, candidates needed the relevant JEE Main score card and rank. The exact requirement should be rechecked for the student’s admission year.
Not under the confirmed 2026 undergraduate framework. Families should not rely on older DASA articles that use SAT Subject Test requirements.
Do not give a universal yes or no. The student’s nationality category and exact school history must be checked against the applicable DASA residential and qualifying-examination rules.
No. The confirmed 2026 residential rule specifically applied the two-year overseas-education condition to Indian nationals studying abroad. Foreign-national cases should be checked under their applicable rules.
No blanket assumption should be made. Check the exact qualifying credential, recognition requirements, required subjects, transcript and grading evidence for the student’s route.
No. Use official school records and the applicable qualification or equivalence requirements rather than inventing a universal GPA-to-percentage conversion.
No. US residence does not establish CIWG eligibility. CIWG has separate qualifying conditions and supporting evidence requirements.
No. Eligibility allows a student to participate when the other application requirements are satisfied. Actual seat allocation also depends on rank, category, preference order, available seats and applicable counselling rules.
Collect the student’s passport/status records, year-by-year school history, diploma details, transcript, grading evidence and exam record. Then check the exact admission-year rule rather than relying on a general NRI or USA answer.
Organize your child’s status, US school record and JEE Main plan before moving into registration, college shortlisting and counselling.
