NRI students have various steps that they need to climb before they get to their destination of JEE. While there are several alternatives when it comes to appearing for the tests, NRI students have not been privileged enough to get a reservation/quota, especially in IITs.
There didn’t exist any quota per se for NRI students, but lately, some Institutes have started providing supernumerary reservations on the university level after the candidate has cleared the examination of JEE-Advanced.
There are only nine countries having JEE exam centers abroad.
JEE Reservations of Seats Involve:
-
27% of seats are reserved for the OBC category (Non-creamy layer)
-
15% for the SC category
-
STs enjoy 7.5% reservation
-
PwD Category (40% or more disability) has a quota of 3%
NRIs do not enjoy any of these quotas even when they belong to the categories of SC or ST or OBC. This is because they are already covered under the NRI reservation policy as stipulated by DTU.
Special Government Scheme for NRI Students:
NRIs are eligible for General Quota (for JEE) & DASA / CIWG quota. The DASA quota stands for Direct Admissions of Students Abroad, and 1/3 of the seats of this quota are reserved for CIWG which stands for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries.
There is a total of 3000 Seats are available for NRI students n prestigious engineering colleges in India.
The fee for those taking admission in CIWG is considerably less than those taking admission through the DASA quota.
Through these quotas, the NRI students have enabled a chance to get admission in their desired colleges like IITs and NITs through their JEE Main Rank (from 2021 onwards).
The students taking the shelter of the NRI quota cannot claim any seats under the categories of SC/ ST/ OBC. This is because the students under the NRI quota are deemed to be the general category of native students.
The fee of NRI students is quite high varying with the quota they have gotten their seat through. If the foreign nationals striving for admission in Indian institutions belong to or have studied from any of the SAARC countries, they are granted a 50% waiver in their fee hence, adding to another facility to the NRI students.
Note: NRI students can use the JEE Advanced Rank to get into prestigious institutes like NITs and IITs. Moreover, the JEE Advanced Rank can be used for grabbing a seat at renowned Technical Institutes- IISERs, IISc, RGIPT, and IIST.
Scope for NRIs:
The various aspects before which this quota can be availed under the DASA scheme include the necessity of the student to have cleared the +2 grade or any equivalent system pertaining to formal education.
It also provides that the student should have scored at least 60% in each subject to applicable to apply for different institutions.
The student is considered applicable for appearing for the exam only if he/ she is under the age of 25 years.
Thus, it is under the DASA scheme that the NRI/ PIO & OCI students are furnished with the opportunity to get admission in National Institutes of Technology, other Centrally Funded Institutes.
All these institutes are reputed when it comes to the aspects of education, research, training, placements, and other activities. For those NRIs who apply under the DASA scheme, a non-refundable payment of US$ 350 is mandatory.
It is crystal clear from the above data that NRI students don’t have an edge over Indian students belonging to the general category. Just like general students, overseas students have to appear for the JEE examination and make sure to beat the cut-off determined and regulated by their desirable colleges.
This allows the NRI students to have a chance to fetch in all the prime colleges when it comes to the list of top-most colleges for engineering.
