The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an academic program started in the late ‘60s to develop youngsters to be better citizen educationally and culturally.
IB Diploma Programme (DP) is an internationally accepted yardstick for judging students for higher education. This academic program is balanced and at the same time challenging. The target age group for this exam is 16 to 19. As of now, IB DP is considered to be one of the leading programmes globally.
The IB continuum of international education for 3 to 19-year-olds is unique because of its academic and personal rigour.
The students in IB currciculum are not just expected to be good in their academic growth but, also in their personal growth. We aim to inspire a quest for learning throughout life that is marked by enthusiasm and empathy. The IB aspires to help schools develop well-rounded students with character who respond to challenges world, complex and unpredictable situations.
Core Courses of the IB diploma programme. To get a full IB diploma, the students shall have to take up six core courses. There are six core courses you have to obtain the full IB diploma. They are
Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature ( English Literature course if you are an American student) Language A: language and literature – 16 languages offered Literature and performance (also group 6) – 3 languages offered
Group 2: Language Acquisition (a foreign language course)
Group 3: Individuals and Societies (History, Economics, Geography, other social sciences)
Group 4: Experimental Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, other sciences)
Group 5: Mathematics
Group 6: The Arts (Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, etc.)
In other words out of six, the total number of subjects to be taken up'The total numbers One each from groups 1-5, as well as either one from group 6 is to be taken up. Alternately a substitute from one of the other groups is allowed instead of group 6.
Two DP subjects are classified as interdisciplinary subjects
The Environmental systems (group 3 and group 4) subjects are to be taken at the HL (higher level). For the rest, SL (standard level) is sufficient to earn the diploma. Higher-level courses demand a minimum of 240 hours of instructional time as per IB recommendations. It is 150 hours for SL courses.
This is to satisfy the requirements of more than one subject group. Besides to facilitate disciplinary and interdisciplinary study, the Diploma Programme also consists of three core elements. The students can take AP English Literature as a junior, and subsequently move as senior to higher-Level IB English. The IB diploma aims at the personality improvement of the students in transforming them into global citizens.
The IB Diploma Programme is challenging and at the same time highly balanced educational system. These programme of education with final examinations meant for students, aged 16 to 19. The IB DP program is designed to meet the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical aspects. The programme has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.
For IB Diploma Programme students must choose one subject from each of the five groups (1 to 5),
This, in turn, ensures breadth of knowledge and understanding in their best language, additional language(s), the social sciences, the experimental sciences and mathematics. Students must also choose either an arts subject from group 6 or the second subject from groups 1 to 5.
DP subjects can be taken at a higher level (minimum 240 hours of teaching hours) or standard level (150 hours)
Students can either study or take examinations, in English, French or Spanish.
Besides IB classes and exams, there are three more core requirements students must complete to earn an IB diploma consisting of the following.
1. The extended essay - The students are asked to involve in in-depth research through a comprehensive study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects
2. Theory of Knowledge Class - A coherent approach and critical thinking to learning are aimed at.
3. CAS - CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) allows students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies. A healthy lifestyle through physical activity is the aim. in the process the community gets the benefit. DP offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic value. The CAS moto ensures that the student's personal and interpersonal skills are getting developed along with the learning.
