Students often face the dilemma of choosing the right calculator for IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches & Application and Interpretation HL exam. In this article, we are going to discuss some of the best calculators that should be used for HL Maths.
IBO has provided a list of calculators that should or should not be used in exams under “The Conduct of IB Diploma Program examinations”. The list can be revised and updated as and when required.
The list of recommended calculators for IB Mathematics HL exam is as given below
TI 84 Series – It is one of the best scientific/graphical calculator that is easy to operate. It is one of the highly recommended calculators by most of the people.
TI 83 Series – It is also a scientific/graphical calculator that was very widely used but doesn’t include many calculus functions.
TI Nspire (non-CAS) – This calculator satisfies all the basic requirements along with added features such as Periodic Table, note making etc. but needs many features to be deleted before giving the exams.
HP Prime V2 Calculator – This one is too cool to be calculator but tends to be little difficult for basic necessities due to its superfluous nature.
FX 9750 GIIPlus or GII Graph 35 Plus – It’s a powerful and affordable graphing calculator with capabilities of performing functions such as calculus, statistics, trigonometry, science, and finance.
CFX 9850 Plus Graph 65 Plus – It’s a problem solving graphing calculator with more than 900 features for graphing, analysis and storing.
FX 9860 Series Graph 75 – These tend to be a bit expensive but can perform calculations and graphs more efficiently.
CG series – FXCG10/20 FX 1.0 Plus – It’s a graphing calculator with features that will enhance your understanding of even the most complicated mathematics problems.

Below is the list of calculators prohibited by IBO in exams.
TI Voyage 200 (all versions)
TI 89 (all versions)
TI 92 (all versions)
TI Nspire CAS (all versions)
TI Nspire (non-CAS) version 1.1 or 1.2 or any other version
Casio FX 2.0 (all versions) FX 9970 (all versions)
Casio Classpad 300 and Graph 100
HP 38-95 (all versions)
There is no particular answer to above question as to which calculator is best for IB exams. Choosing a calculator largely depends on what are you looking for in a calculator.
The scientific calculator is good for standard calculations such as exponential, fractions, trigonometry, quadratic equations etc. whereas a graphical calculator is more suitable for high-level problems such as Poisson Distribution, plotting graphs, statistics and so on.
You can also take the recommendation of your teachers and friends before buying a calculator.
Also, you must be able to operate it easily and you can take help from your teachers as well. So, choose the one that you can operate easily and, in any difficulty, you can take help from others. Hope the above article is helpful enough for you to choose the best calculator.
