Why Switch from CBSE to IB?

• IB is a very reputable curriculum and is Internationally recognised by the top universities and colleges like Harvard, MIT, Cambridge and has a very good acceptance rate.

• It focuses on the Holistic Academic approach which helps a student to gain more knowledge and improves reading and writing skills

• It helps in personal and social development by having mandatory core requirements like CAS (Creative, Activity and Service).

Factors to be taken into consideration before changing

Budget

Before Changing from CBSE to IB make sure you consider your Education Budget. IB can be a bit expensive as compared to CBSE. IB tuition fees range from Rs.3.5-5 Lacs per annum whereas CBSE 2-3 lacs per annum. Don’t financially burden yourself if you can’t afford it. Taking an Education Loan for IB is not worth it.  

Abroad for Higher Education

If you are planning to go abroad for further studies or going to reside there, then IB is the appropriate curriculum to choose. International colleges prefer IB students as their preparation methods and approach is more aligned with theirs. 

IB assessments like the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) will help you get admissions to universities.

The acceptance rate for IB students in colleges is generally really high. 

Indian Competitive Exams

Prestigious Indian Exams like JEE ( For engineering), NEET (For Medicine) and CAT (For MBA) are strictly based on the CBSE curriculum. IB students find it very hard to compete as their syllabus is not at the level in terms of Knowledge and Depth as compared to CBSE. They will have to take extra preparation classes which is not ideal. That being said, they can still crack it.

Mode of Learning

IB focuses on a holistic approach and believes in developing critical and analytical skills whereas CBSE is a more exam focussed board. Writing and Reading skills will be given more emphasis in IB rather than CBSE. For example, Extended Essays and Theory Of knowledge will require extensive writing skills and will help in college applications. However, in CBSE more depth and knowledge is gained of subjects like Math and Sciences as compared to IB. 

Lifestyle

IB is a rigorous programme and requires commitment. There are a lot of assignments and tests as part of the Internal Assessment which becomes very hectic for IB students to manage. It will hinder your social lifestyle and you can’t be as lenient and easy going as you were as a CBSE student. On top of the assignments, you will have to write a 4000-word essay, which is very important for you to get the Diploma. You will have to change your lifestyle in order to survive IB.

When Should you change?

There is no right or wrong time to change from CBSE to IB. It depends on the agenda and motive to change. If you want to study abroad then changing from 11th helps (IBDP 1). Changing before the 10th standard doesn’t impact a lot. While adjusting to a new curriculum is difficult, it’s not impossible. 

Before switching make sure you have done your research and talk to an existing IB student, It will help you make an informed decision.
