Combination of Inductances – Complete Notes, Revision, Important Questions & Downloads

Combination of Inductances converts self and mutual inductance ideas into circuit-level equivalent inductance, and this topic is organised through Series Combination and Parallel Combination. The controlling formulas are LS = L1 + L2 for uncoupled series coils, LS = L1 + L2 plus or minus 2M for coupled series coils, LP = L1L2/(L1 + L2) for uncoupled parallel coils, and LP = (L1L2 - M^2)/(L1 + L2 plus or minus 2M) when mutual inductance matters. NEET tests this topic through sign choice in aiding versus opposing flux cases, direct equivalent-inductance numericals, and recognition of when mutual inductance can be neglected. The main trap is algebraic only on the surface; the real error is physical, because students forget to decide first whether the magnetic coupling strengthens or cancels the total flux linkage.

Combination-of-inductances questions are usually fast scorers once the student identifies whether mutual inductance is negligible or active.
The plus or minus 2M term in series combination is the most common discriminator because it encodes aiding versus opposing flux linkage rather than mere arithmetic choice.

Parallel combination becomes tricky because students often remember the uncoupled reciprocal form but forget the coupled denominator and numerator structure.

Preparation Strategy

1

Decide First Whether M Matters Before writing any formula, check whether the coils are far apart or magnetically coupled. That single decision tells you whether the mutual-inductance term enters at all.

2

Attach the Sign to the Flux Relation Use plus when the magnetic effects aid each other and minus when they oppose. Memorising signs without this physical picture creates avoidable errors in both series and parallel cases.

3

Keep Series and Parallel Forms Separate Series questions usually stay additive in structure, but parallel questions require more care because the equivalent inductance depends on a fraction. Mixing the two forms is one of the fastest ways to lose the mark.

4

Use Limiting Checks After Solving If M = 0, the coupled formula should reduce to the uncoupled case. This reduction is a quick consistency check and often catches algebra mistakes immediately.

Quick Revision

Concept → Trap → Example

1) Series Combination

Additive Form

For two coils in series, the equivalent inductance is LS = L1 + L2 when mutual inductance is negligible. If the coils are magnetically coupled, the equivalent inductance becomes LS = L1 + L2 plus or minus 2M, with the sign determined by whether the fluxes aid or oppose.

  • Far-apart coils behave like uncoupled inductors, so only self-inductance terms survive.
  • Aiding flux increases total flux linkage and therefore increases equivalent inductance.
  • Trap: choosing the sign from memory without checking whether the coupling helps or cancels the linked flux.
Example (NEET-style)If L1 = 2 H, L2 = 3 H, and M = 0.5 H, then the aided series combination gives 2 + 3 + 1 = 6 H, while the opposing series combination gives 2 + 3 - 1 = 4 H.

2) Parallel Combination

Fraction Form

For uncoupled parallel inductors, 1/LP = 1/L1 + 1/L2, so LP = L1L2/(L1 + L2). When mutual inductance matters, the textbook expression becomes LP = (L1L2 - M^2)/(L1 + L2 plus or minus 2M), and the same aided or opposing sign logic remains active in the denominator.

  • The uncoupled form always gives an equivalent inductance smaller than either individual inductor.
  • Mutual coupling changes both the numerator and denominator, so the M = 0 limit is the quickest self-check.
  • Trap: carrying the series formula into a parallel question because both contain the same L1, L2, and M symbols.
Example (NEET-style)For L1 = 6 H and L2 = 3 H with no mutual inductance, LP = 18/9 = 2 H, which is smaller than both original inductances as expected for a parallel combination.

US Curriculum Gaps

Note for NRI/OCI students studying abroad.

Mutual-Coupling Cases Are Often Skipped

Students may practise only uncoupled inductors and then face difficulty when the equivalent inductance depends on magnetic aiding or opposition through M.

  • know when M is negligible
  • use aiding or opposing logic

Parallel Inductor Form Is Less Familiar

Parallel combinations are usually remembered for resistors and capacitors, so inductors with mutual coupling feel less intuitive unless the formula structure is revised deliberately.

  • check the M = 0 limit
  • do not copy resistor intuition blindly

Concept IQ Check

Exam-style checks
1Two inductors L1 and L2 are connected in series far apart from each other. Their equivalent inductance is:Uncoupled series
L1 + L2
L1L2/(L1 + L2)
L1 + L2 + 2M
(L1L2 - M^2)/(L1 + L2)
When the coils are far apart, mutual inductance is negligible, so only the two self-inductances add in series. The result is directly LS = L1 + L2, with no M term at all, because neither coil contributes extra flux linkage to the other in any meaningful way. This is the clean uncoupled limit and should always be the first formula you test before introducing a mutual-inductance correction.
2In a coupled series combination of inductors, the plus sign in LS = L1 + L2 plus or minus 2M is used when:Sign choice
the fluxes oppose each other
the mutual inductance is zero
the fluxes aid each other
the coils are connected in parallel
The plus sign corresponds to aiding coupling because the mutual flux increases the total flux linkage. The minus sign is used when the induced effects oppose each other and reduce the total equivalent inductance.

1Two uncoupled inductors 4 H and 6 H are connected in series. What is the equivalent inductance?
2.4 H
5 H
10 H
24 H
👁 Reveal Answer
10 H. For uncoupled series inductors the equivalent value is a direct sum, so LS = 4 + 6 = 10 H.
2Two coupled inductors have L1 = 3 H, L2 = 5 H, and M = 1 H. What is the equivalent inductance for aiding series connection?
6 H
8 H
10 H
12 H
👁 Reveal Answer
10 H. In an aiding series combination, LS = L1 + L2 + 2M = 3 + 5 + 2 = 10 H, so the mutual term increases the total inductance by two henry.
3The same inductors in the previous question are now connected in opposing series combination. What is the equivalent inductance?
4 H
6 H
8 H
10 H
👁 Reveal Answer
6 H. For opposing flux, LS = L1 + L2 - 2M = 3 + 5 - 2 = 6 H, showing clearly how opposing coupling lowers the equivalent inductance.
4Two uncoupled inductors 6 H and 3 H are connected in parallel. What is the equivalent inductance?
1 H
2 H
3 H
9 H
👁 Reveal Answer
2 H. For uncoupled parallel inductors, LP = L1L2/(L1 + L2) = 18/9 = 2 H, which is smaller than both individual inductances as expected in parallel combination.
5What is the safest quick check after using a coupled-inductor formula?
set B = 0
set M = 0 and see whether the expression reduces to the uncoupled case
replace all inductances by resistances
assume the sign is always plus
👁 Reveal Answer
Set M = 0 and verify that the result reduces to the uncoupled expression. This quick limit test catches many sign and algebra mistakes in both series and parallel formulas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Notes · Downloads · Revision · Important Questions
What does Combination of Inductances study?
It studies how two inductors behave when connected together in series or parallel, both when mutual inductance is negligible and when magnetic coupling is active.
Why is the uncoupled series formula simply L1 + L2?
Because in series the flux-linkage effects of the two separate inductors add directly when there is no mutual coupling term to modify them.
What decides whether the series formula uses plus 2M or minus 2M?
The sign depends on whether the mutual flux aids the self fluxes or opposes them. Aiding increases the equivalent inductance, while opposition decreases it.
Why is parallel combination harder than series combination here?
Because the equivalent inductance is expressed through a fraction and, in the coupled case, both numerator and denominator carry the effect of M. That makes sign and reduction checks more important than in the series case.
How do I know mutual inductance can be ignored?
If the coils are far from each other or the problem explicitly states that mutual induction is negligible, then M is taken as zero and the uncoupled formulas apply.
What is the quickest self-check in a coupled-inductor numerical?
After obtaining the expression, put M = 0 mentally and see whether the formula reduces to the standard uncoupled series or parallel result. If it does not, the algebra or sign choice is wrong.
Can parallel equivalent inductance be larger than both inductors in the uncoupled case?
No. For uncoupled parallel inductors, the equivalent inductance comes out smaller than either individual inductance, just as a quick physical and algebraic check would suggest.
How does NEET usually ask this topic?
Mostly through direct equivalent-inductance numericals, sign-selection MCQs for aided or opposing coupling, or quick checks where the student must identify when mutual inductance is negligible.
