JEE Rank for NRIs to get in top Govt Engineering Colleges:
JEE is a popular Engineering Entrance Exam among the students in India & NRI Students residing abroad as well. Every year, only a few thousand of students out of Lakhs of applicants are able to secure a seat in top engineering colleges of India for UG courses. This is done on the basis of results of JEE i.e. their JEE Ranks.
In this blog, we will elaborate the JEE Ranks that NRI students must have to get in the top Government engineering colleges.
Based on JEE Rank & Sat 2 Scores, the procedure currently followed for admission to premier institutes in India for NRI, PIO & OCI Students are as follows
- Qualify SAT II scores to get admitted in NITs, IIITs, CFIs & SPAs under DASA / CIWG Quota. Although SAT 2 will only be valid till the academic year 2020-2021. From 2021 onwards, JEE Rank is mandatory for DASA CIWG.
- Qualify JEE mains and JEE advanced to seek admissions in IITs. Apart from IITs, top govt. colleges that accept only JEE Advanced Rank are IISERs, IIST, RGIPT & a few more.
Note: According to the latest update from DASA, from session 2021-22 onwards, JEE Mains Rank is mandatory for NRI/ PIO/ OCI/ FN Students to be eligible for DASA & CIWG Schemes. Hence, 2020-21 will be the last year when SAT 2 scores will be considered for DASA/CIWG Scheme.
Admission to IITs through JEE advanced:
Only the students who clear JEE Advanced with good Rank can take admissions in IITs. Hence, clearing JEE mains is an important criterion for NRI students to be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. There are no reservations under DASA/CIWG scheme allotted for admission to IITs and even NRI students must undertake the JEE mains and advanced for admissions to IITs.
In the year 2018, a maximum of 2,24,000 seats was allotted for JEE Mains qualified students to appear for JEE advanced. The same was raised to 2,45,000 for the JEE Mains in 2019.
The trends obtained in the previous years will help students get an idea of the qualifying marks and rank list and what can be expected for the next year’s JEE Results. The cut off for the category wise ranking released by NTA for the JEE Mains 2019 is given in the table.

Each year, the admission cut off for JEE Mains differs from JEE Mains qualifying cut off. Based on these percentile all students obtain in JEE, the cutoff is decided. And based on a students’ score/percentile, his/her JEE Rank is given. The JEE Mains qualifying cut off allows students to be eligible to apply for JEE advanced exam. Whereas the JEE Mains admission cut off is issued by the JoSAA department that is responsible for seat allocations of JEE qualified students.
How to seek admission to the institutes through JEE Rank?
The admission and joint seat allocation for candidates who have managed to crack JEE to apply for various JoSAA participating colleges are governed by a committee JoSAA.
- Candidates with valid SAT II scores can apply for the colleges including NITs and other institutes under the list (under DASA /CIWG Scheme).
- Candidate who cleared the JEE Advanced exams can apply for all the 100 premier institutes participating in the admission process.
- Candidates will be required to fill their choices in decreasing order of preference. JoSAA conducts 7 rounds of seat allocation. Further students must proceed to pay the acceptance fees and carry on with other procedures.
Admission to NITs, SPA’s and other government institutes:
For NRI Students residing in Oman, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, or anywhere in the world, focusing more on studies is important now because of the tough nature or JEE (compared to SAT 2). The higher the scores, the easier you can grab the desired courses in your dream government institutes.
To settle the confusion among students, the JEE mains admission scores released by JoSAA makes you eligible for applying to NITs, SPAs and other governments institutes. The JEE Mains qualifying scores allow students to appear for JEE advanced. The qualified students of JEE advanced are eligible for admissions to IITs.
