I Have A Question

IB Biology

IB Biology

Biology is one of the subjects in the Science course of IB. Biology is growing at an immeasurable rate and scientists can organize these many facts around several core concepts. In this course, students will learn to be scientists in exploring the correlation between these core concepts using a variety of methods.

These methods include student’s investigation and inquiry skills, research, analysis, and application. Students will impart their ability to apply and revise their findings in a lot many ways such as professional-level verbal, visual, and written communications.

Students will develop a strong basic understanding of the nature of science and will be able to describe how acquired knowledge leads to new and different questions.

At one end of the scale is the cell, its molecular structure, and complex metabolic reactions whereas at the other end, biologists investigate the relation and interaction that make whole ecosystems function.  Many discoveries are in pipeline and great progress is expected in the coming future.

Through the study of a science subject, the student should be able to know how scientists work and communicate with each other. While scientific methods may take on a wide variety of forms, the emphasis lies on the practical approach.

The science course id taught practically, and students get opportunities to lay investigations, collect data, develop manipulative skills, analyze results, collaborate with fellow students and evaluate and discuss their findings. The investigations may be laboratory-based or simulations and data-based.

Students will develop the skills to work on their own design independently along with collaboration with schools in different regions, to find out the way in which scientific research is conducted.

Biology syllabus outline:

1. Available at standard level(SL) and higher level (HL)

2. The minimum prescribed number of hours is 150 for SL and 240 for HL

3. Higher level (240 hours)

4. Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%

5. External assessment: 80%

6. Standard level (150 hours)

7. Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%

8. External assessment: 80%

Key features of the Curriculum and Assessment Models

Students are assessed both externally and internally. Biology students at both the levels (SL and HL) must take on a common core syllabus and must pass a common internal assessment (IA) scheme.

While there are skills and activities common to both SL and HL students, students at HL are required to study the options and topics in greater depth along with some additional topics.

A practical approach to the course delivery is emphasized through the group 4 project and a mixture of both long-term and short-term experiments and investigations.

Internal assessment accounts for 20% of the final assessment and this is assessed through an individual investigation. This investigation may involve a hands-on approach to the use of databases, modeling, simulation, or a hybrid. Student work is assessed internally by the teacher and moderated externally by the IB.

Assessment Question Paper

The external assessment of biology consists of three written papers.  In paper 1 there are 30 questions at Standard Level or 40 at High Level multiple-choice questions. Paper 2 contains short-answer and extended-response questions (and Additional Higher Level (AHL) material at HL).

Paper 3 includes 2 parts; Part A comprises of one data-based question and several short-answer questions on experimental work along with AHL material at HL. Part B contains short-answer and extended-response questions from each of the four options.
